Catalyzing a cleaner future.

At ESS (NYSE: GWH), our mission is to accelerate global decarbonization by providing safe, sustainable, long-duration energy storage that powers people, communities, and businesses with clean, renewable energy anytime and anywhere it’s needed. As more renewable energy is added to the grid, long- duration battery energy storage systems (BESS) are essential to providing the reliability and resiliency we need when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.

Our technology uses earth-abundant iron, salt, and water to deliver environmentally safe solutions capable of providing up to 12 hours of flexible energy capacity for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications. Established in 2011, ESS Inc. enables project developers, independent power producers, utilities, and other large energy users to deploy reliable, sustainable long-duration energy storage solutions. ESS is seeking a Senior Manager of System Integration, Test, and Reliability to lead efforts to establish a dedicated systems integration, test, and reliability team with a focus on ensuring that iron flow battery energy storage systems are robust and resilient under real-world operating conditions. This role will be pivotal in guaranteeing that integrated designs maintain the highest levels of quality and reliability throughout the daily operational cycles and deployment in the field. The successful candidate will work closely with the product engineering team to optimize designs for manufacturability and long-term durability, considering the impact of environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, chemicals, and gas on integrated systems and assemblies.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead a system integration, test, and reliability team, with a primary focus on ensuring integrated designs are resilient and can withstand field conditions for iron flow battery energy storage systems.
  • Develop and implement system integration and test strategies, ensuring that hardware and software integration is seamless, and that system designs are robust across various environmental and operational factors.
  • Work closely with the product engineering team to influence product design for optimal reliability, manufacturability, and long-term quality.
  • Establish testing processes to assess the impact of temperature, pressure, chemicals, and gas on systems, collaborating with engineering teams to optimize product designs accordingly.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system integration processes and test procedures address full system requirements, with a focus on real-world deployment conditions and grid-scale readiness.
  • Define and implement best practices for system integration, testing, and troubleshooting, and develop methodologies that address the performance of iron flow battery systems in varying environments.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators related to system reliability, integration, and test, ensuring continuous improvement and timely resolution of any issues.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations, with a focus on battery energy storage and high-voltage systems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in system integration, test planning, and execution, particularly in energy storage or related fields.
  • 5+ years of experience building, leading, and developing technical teams.
  • 8+ years of experience in complex system integration and testing.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with large-scale energy storage systems, preferably iron flow batteries.
  • Strong understanding of the impact of environmental factors (temperature, pressure, chemicals, gas) on system performance and reliability.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a focus on innovation and efficiency.
