We are hiring a Packaging Engineer II to develop and optimize packaging solutions for incoming materials as well as crating solutions for outgoing products. This is a new position at ESS and will require someone to implement new processes with internal customers to design, review, recommend, test and implement various packaging proposals. This person will work closely with the Supply Chain Management sourcing team to improve packaging of supplier provided components that support our quality, cost and waste reduction initiatives. There will also be collaboration with the Lean Manager to identify opportunities for improved packaging solutions used within the manufacturing process.
What you’ll do at ESS
- Provide packaging recommendations and technical leadership for project teams to reduce overall material costs and eliminate waste.
- Design complete packaging solutions to streamline the flow of incoming material from receiving into production.
- Collaborate with suppliers on packaging solutions that can feed into automation equipment with minimal to no handling.
- Develop ROI assessments for reusable packaging solutions and drive organizational alignment to fund projects.
- Manage the execution of packaging development projects with internal and external stakeholders to ensure on-time and on-budget development.
- Direct, coordinate, support and/or audit manufacturing and packaging activities to ensure packaging, products, and systems conform to packaging design specifications.
- Define, research and analyze supplier data proposals, drawings/specifications, application, and materials to determine feasibility of design or application considering cost, time, and other factors.
- Support creation and review of packaging quality standards and tolerances.
- Collaborate to develop methods and procedures for testing packaging solutions.
- May perform hands-on assembly of prototype packaging and support the preliminary testing of packaging concepts.
- Investigate and solves problems that affect packaging material quality, sizes, warranty/reliability, and product cost for new and/or existing supplier packaging.
- Communicate design intent through creation of robust packaging product specifications and, along with the documented spec, provides the necessary guidance for successful design execution.
What you bring to the table.
Minimum requirements:
- BA/BS Degree
- Preferred: Packaging Engineering Degree
- Possess advanced understanding of packaging concepts and principles.
- Demonstrated experience in delivering packaging solutions (ideally in a manufacturing environment).
- Ability and willingness to work independently and travel 25% (domestic + international) to collaborate with vendors and suppliers on packaging solutions.
- Experience in fixture design, equipment design, or manufacturing/process optimization a plus.
- Ability to foster team (internal and external) commitment to tasks and execution.
- Ability to influence key individuals inside and outside of own group.
- Excellent organization and communication skills with an ability to express complex technical concepts in business terms.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
